Recognising Fake Profiles & Scams

Most members are genuine, but matrimony services attract people with other motives. Watch for these signs.

Warning signs

  • Any request for money โ€” hospital bills, visa fees, a gift stuck at customs, a business opportunity
  • Intense affection or talk of marriage within days, before families have spoken
  • Reluctance to video call or to let you speak with their family
  • Photos that look professionally modelled, or very few photos
  • Stories about work, family or location that change between conversations
  • Pressure to keep the relationship secret or to decide quickly
  • Insisting you pay a particular astrologer or buy a remedy before proceeding

Protect yourself

  • Prefer verified profiles and ask unverified matches to verify
  • Video call before meeting and involve both families early
  • Confirm workplace and hometown through people you know, not documents sent to you
  • Never share your NIC, passport, bank details or OTP codes
  • Meet in public during the day, with a family member present or nearby
